The course starts with an overview of the social, political and economic conditions of the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the XV Century and how those conditions affected the development of the new continent. The student will be able to assess how the political and economic developments in Puerto Rico helped shape the growth of our distinct society under Spanish rule. The second half of the course evaluates the American hegemony and its contributions to the development of the Puerto Rican culture.

 

 

Here is the class outline:

1. Geography & the Pre-Columbian Inhabitants

In this lesson the students will be able to explore the geographical constitution of the Island and the Caribbean. Students will study the geological origins of the Caribbean Islands. The second pat of the lesson, students will analyze the origins and characteristics of the Pre-Columbian inhabitants.

2. Profile of the Newcommers

Jun 5

Students analyze the social, political and economic conditions of the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula.

3. Two Worlds Collide

Jun 5

Students analyze the era of "discovery" and the first years of Spanish control. Students analyze the the development of the economy until the construction of El Morro.

4. Foreign Attack & Imperial Neglect

Jun 12

Students analyze how foreign attacks helped shape the development of the economy. Students will also analyze the development of the Puerto Rican culture.

5. Sugar & Slavery

Jun 12

Students analyze the consequences of the establishment of a monocultural economy on the Island. Students assess the development of slavery in Puerto Rico.

6. Revolution & Autonomy

Jun 19

Students analyze the economic, social and political developments of the second half of the 19th Century. Students will discuss the economic and political conditions that led to the Lares Uprising.

7. Change of the Guard

Students analyze American imperialism and its consequences on the Caribbean.

8. Agrarian Capitalism

Jun 19

Students analyze the economic policies implemented in Puerto Rico and how those policies were influenced by military strategy.

9. Crisis & Transformation

Jun 26

Students analyze the political, social and economic consequences in Puerto Rico of the Great Depression.

10. State Capitalism & Operation Bootstrap

Jun 26

Students analyze the economic effects of World War II in Puerto Rico. Students assess how Puerto Rico and the Unitd States transformed the Island's economy from agrarian to industrial.
